Exploring Digital Heritage

Hello!

I’m Nour, I’m currently in my third year of Museums, Heritage and Conservation, majoring in Conservation and with a particular interest in painting conservation. I currently live on campus at Cooper Lodge, I work at Coles Belconnen (hi if you’ve seen me there!), and volunteer at the Calvary hospital, between work, volunteering and uni I try to stay active/busy by riding around the lake, painting, and reading. I wish I could say I do these things every day but realistically I can be pretty lazy most of the time.

I moved down from Melbourne just under three years ago to study at UC. In Melbourne I started and stopped a number of different courses trying to find something I was really passionate about; I tried to study visual arts but it wasn’t enough for me, then I tried to study science but it was too much for me – hidden somewhere between visual arts and science was painting conservation and it turned out to be a career I was passionate about pursuing! I’m half Syrian and half Lebanese so the dream is to one day work as a conservator in the middle east (keyword: dream).

I am really interested in heritage, but before starting this course I never considered the idea of digital heritage, but since touching on this topic in my past semesters I have found it to be not just interesting, but really important. I will be completing this unit primarily as an online unit due to a clash between this and Forensic Science but I am really excited to see how the semester progresses.

‘Hello World’, what a phrase! Both a slightly odd greeting, and the catchy theme song to an iconic Australian children’s program from the 2000s – The Saddle Club. Much of the lyrics in this song are easily identifiable with me and how I try to live – sometimes I AM insecure, and life is often easier when you’re smiling, and it definitely should be fun! After all, I believe that we only get one life and so we should make the most of it. And most importantly, we should embrace who we are – unless of course who you really are is something along the lines of a serial killer or psychopath, then maybe not embrace that….

Now you may be asking yourself, who is this person who likes The Saddle Club? The “simple” answer is this… I am a born and raised Sydney girl. My initials are ABC and my first name is Amber – and yes, I have the answer, but do YOU have the right question… My mother’s side is Ukrainian and I take pride in that heritage. I am the youngest of 6 girls – the 4 eldest being from my dad’s previous marriage – and as of today I have 3 nephews and 3 nieces – half of whom I love dearly and am more and more proud of every day.

I consider myself to be a somewhat quirky person, I make bad jokes all the time, and I love Disney, Jane Austen (Mr Darcy forever <3), history, sheep and reading!! I think of myself as someone who is loyal to my friends and family, but if you damage that friendship by treating badly repeatedly without remorse or just reveal your true colours and turn out to be a not-so-great person in general, then you should consider yourself dead to me and all contact between us will be stopped – if possible.

I moved to Canberra to study and follow my passion for history and its preservation and conservation. My studies have been fascinating and exciting – to me, at least. I’ve learned about different kinds of materials, how to make boxes with acid-free cardboard, and now I am learning about ways with which cultural and heritage data ca be used digitally to provide new perspectives on different subjects.

This blog account was created due to a Uni class – Exploring Digital Heritage. From this class I am hoping to get some ideas and inspiration for ways that I can display at least a portion of the family history research I have found.

Hello!

My name is Aiden and I’m here at the second workshop for ‘Exploring Digital Heritage’ unit at UC, although it’s the first workshop for me as I missed week one due to the usual excuses (work/sleep/not work). I’m excited for this unit, for two reasons; first is that I’m doing the Conservation and Heritage degree, and find topics of the field fascinating, and second is that this is my final unit before graduating!!!

The workshop has been good so far. Introduction to Zooniverse was great. Zooniverse is a website dedicated to crowd-sourcing various projects to make use of a small amount of various peoples time and effort, to create something much greater. There a few projects to choose from, and I selected Science Gossip to try out. Science Gossip is dedicated to annotating images found in scientific journals of the Victorian era. I found the process really simple and easy to do, while really intriguing. I think the compelling feeling to continue to add to a crowd-sourcing project like Science Gossip is the unknown possibilities; the next page I request could feature anything! I think I will log in at home and give Zooniverse another go.

Anyway, time’s up, back to the workshop.

I’m Emma, I’m studying Exploring Digital Heritage unit because it is a compulsory unit for me. However  I’m interested in the way that digital heritage via different technologies and platforms can contribute to the understanding of  different histories, cultures, ect.. from the input of the public.

Hiya!

My name is Patience (and unfortunately no I’m not always). I’m the youngest of too many brothers and have a love for Textiles and History. I’ve lived in 3 states and 1 territory but haven’t traveled outside of Australia since I was 4.

I’m currently a part of the unit ‘Exploring Digital Heritage’ at University of Canberra and hope that this class will provide me with some of the skills I need to be able to do more than procrastinate watching videos on YouTube.

At some point I want to work in Textiles conservation but I suspect that aim is a few more years away for me.
